Laboratory Assistant

Laboratory Assistants usually work under the direction of scientists in a variety of fields which include; dairy production, food preservation research, entomology, plant pathology, botany, agricultural chemistry, biochemistry, pathology, artificial insemination, wine production, minerals and chemical industries, science equipment manufacturing, plastics and occupational health

Tasks that may be completed by a Laboratory Assistant

  • Clean, maintain and set up equipment for use in experiments
  • Collect, classify and preserve specimens and samples
  • Perform diagnostic and other scientific tests on specimens, such as animal and plant tissues, food and water in order to identify chemical or cellular or other constituents, bacterial content and chemical contamination
  • Carry out experimental procedures
  • Inspect and test animals and plants for diseases
  • Perform routine mathematical calculations and prepare graphs
  • Carry out routine quality assurance checks on production line samples and materials

  • Enjoy scientific activities
  • Ability to produce accurate and detailed work
  • Good eyesight and normal colour vision
  • Able to work within a team environment

Entry into your apprenticeship

To become a laboratory worker you usually have to complete an apprenticeship in Laboratory Skills or Laboratory Techniques. Employers prefer year 11 and 12 however entry requirements may vary. Speak to your teachers about the possibility of starting some of this training in school. You can also become a laboratory worker by completing a certificate in laboratory skills/techniques. Entry to the certificate courses usually requires your SACE or Year 12. As subjects can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for full details.

Employment Opportunities

Employment may be available in manufacturing companies, educational institutions, hospitals, breweries, hospitals and the food industry. Competition for employment is fairly strong due to the number of science graduates applying for positions. With experience and further study, it is possible to specialise.
