Through Manufacturing Skills Australia, businesses can now access trainig subsidies of $750 per person to upskill existing workers in skills for sustainability

Training will occcur throughout 2010. MSA aims to facilitate the training for around 400 workers in enterprises around Australia.

The Upskilling Existing Workers in Skills for Sustainability project aims to build the capacity of the Australian workforce to remain productive during the transition to a low carbon economy. MSA has obtained funding to trial the project in selected small to medium enterprises.

To receive the funding you must be a small or medium sized business as shown below:

  • small business
    • less than 20 employees
  • medium business
    • less than 200 employees

Funding is up to $750 per worker, with enterprises to match the contribution before the training commences.

Are my workers eligible?

Existing worker participants must hold an existing accredited Australian vocational qualification.

How is the training provided?

Training will be provided by a Registered Training Organisation in a small selection of Units of Competency from nationally accredited Training Packages that address sustainability.

Why is the program important?

The current global financial crisis, fierce global competition, skill shortages, emissions trading and compliance costs, together with continual change have meant that innovation and efficiencies must now be central to any manufacturing business model.

The new drivers are both an opportunity and a threat to manufacturing.

To help harness the positives, the manufacturing industry will need to ensure it has the skills to:

  • maximise efficiencies and minimise waste at all levels of production
  • innovate new, more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable products, processes and technologies
  • establish efficient international supply chains
  • monitor and report on emissions
