Light Manufacturing

The light manufacturing industries cover activities in two broad groups.

The first group covers the textile, clothing and footwear sectors of clothing production, footwear production, footwear repair, textile production, textile fabrication including sails and canvas making, hide, skin and leather processing, cotton ginning, early stage wool processing, headwear and millinery, and leather goods production.

The second group covers the furnishing sectors of cabinet making, wood machining, furniture polishing, upholstery, picture framing, bed and mattress making, floor covering and finishing, soft furnishing, blinds and awnings, musical instruments (tuning and repair), and glass and glazing.

Metal, Engineering and Aerospace

This industry employs in excess of three quarters of a million employees who conceive, design, manufacture, assemble, install, service and repair, package and sell manufactured and engineered products.

Manufacturing and Engineering
Manufactured goods make up more than 50% of our exports. Around 70% of the companies in the manufacturing and engineering sector are either direct exporters or suppliers to an export company.

Aerospace
Aerospace enterprises employ around 22,000 people and directly contribute about $2 billion dollars to Australia ’s annual GDP (estimated). The industry uses significant high-technology applications and increasingly focuses on integration with global markets.

Process Manufacturing

Process Manufacturing is a major industry sector within manufacturing, adding considerably to the Australian economy.

The process manufacturing industries employ about 160,000 Australians, which can be divided into the following industry groupings:

  • Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Oil refining
  • Rubber and Plastic Product Manufacturing and Cable-making
  • Laboratory Operations (sample testing)
  • Manufactured Mineral Products (cement, ceramics, paving, bricks)

These industries contribute disproportionately to gross domestic product. Industry value added per employee in process manufacturing is well above the all-manufacturing and the all-industry figures.
